Daybreak: A Romance of an Old World.
New York: George H. Richmond, 1896. First Edition. Hardcover. Octavo. viii + 400pp. Blue cloth lettered & decorated in gilt & silver on spine & front board. B/w frontis. & plates. Top-edge-gilt. A 19th century quasi-Utopian novel which uses an earth-man's visit to an idealised (and more than a little implausible) superior race and civilisation on Mars to highlight the moral, political, religious and social failures of humanity. The devout Christianity of the Martians is only one of the many rather odd features of the work. Spine ends chafed, slight discoloration to spine & boards, small bumps to corners of boards, else a solid VG copy (no dust jacket). Item #49715
