Booklet. 6 1/4 x 4 inches. 24pp. A booklet rather simply rebound in modern marbled papered boards, plain red cloth spine, paper table-label on front board. Unfortunately the wrappers which would have held much of the publication details are not bound in, but as far as can ascertain this is the first edition of this rare booklet. There is not much bibliographic material available, but the first edition was published in 1853 and had 24 pages (as does this), whereas the second (and only other) edition was from 1854 and had 28 pages. In the booklet the author investigates that then-recent incidents of table-rapping, table-turning and spirit music, and concludes that while the phenomena may be genuine (as opposed to fake) they are not the work of "spirits" but of the deceased, but rather of "the spirits of devils working miracles." Gutter a little pulled after first page, else a clean VG copy. Genuinely rare. Item #49969
