Unflattering b&w frontisportrait of H. P. Blavatsky with the imprinted caption "the greatest imposter in history" beneath it. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the front endpaper. A critique of the Theosophical Society and H. P. Blavatsky by John Nevil Maskelyne - the first in a well-known family of conjurers. Spine faded and spine ends bruised, cloth a bit rubbed and darkened with a few faints marks, some fraying to bottom edge of front board. Endpapers unevenly browned, a few spots of adhesive residue on front pastedown. Still overall a tight unmarked near VG copy. Item #53579
