Lucifer. A Theosophical Magazine, Designed to "Bring to Light the Hidden Things of Darkness." Volume XII. March - August, 1893 ( 6 issues in 1 bound volum.

London: Theosophical Publishing Society, 1893. First Edition. Hardcover, Quarto. iv + 616pp (note due to a printing error in all copies the pagination jumps from p. 351 to 441). Contemporary dark blue cloth boards with leather corners, recently rebacked with black cloth spine with gilt titling. Six bound issues of the Theosophical journal "Lucifer," Vol. XII No. 67, March 1893 - Vol. XII No. 72, August 1893 inclusive. The present volume was clearly issued as a bound volume rather than being bound up from parts: it has a joint title-page for all six numbers, an Index leaf, and the wrappers are NOT bound in. The first issue of "Lucifer" was published under the editorship of H . P. Blavatsky in September 1887. In 1889 Annie Besant joined her as co-editor, taking over the editorship at Blavatsky's death in May 1891. Besant remained editor with G. R. S. Mead becoming a co-editor in September 1895. It's final, 20th volume was issued in August 1897, at which time it was rechristened "The Theosophical Review." "Lucifer" represented Theosophy in its broadest sense, with essays and articles not only relating to the Society and its aims, but also on other occult, religious, and philosophical subjects, as well as updates on the spread of Theosophy, book reviews, etc. In addition to essays etc. by Theosophical Society luminaries such as Annie Besant, William Quan Judge, H. P. Blavastky, A. P. Sinnett and many others, the issues in this volume also contain essays such as "The Foundation of Christian Mysticism (According to Master Eckhart)" (parts 2 - 5) by Franz Hartmann; "A Further Glance at the Kabalah" (Parts 1 & 2) by W. Wynn Westcott, "The Phallicism in the Fifth Commandment" by Alexander Fullerton; "French Spiritism" by W. F. Kirby; and "Edgar Allan Poe & Occultism" - an extract from Poe's prose-poem "Eureka", etc. etc. In addition to many Theosophical etc. works, books reviews include "Azoth; or, The Star in the East" by Arthur Edward Waite; "A Golden & Blessed Casket of Nature's Marvels" by Benedictus Figulus, translated by A. E. Waite and "Magic, White & Black" by Franz Hartmann. Fresh endpapers. Leather corners very heavily rubbed, but thanks to the recent rebacking the volume is strongly bound. A little shadowing to the title-page, and slight darkening to a few leaves. Still a tight, VG + copy.
