London: Theosophical Publishing Society, 1896. Hardcover. Small octavo. 92 pp. Original blue cloth with gilt title on spine and front board. A volume in the Collectanea Hermetica series, edited by W Wynn Westcott, one of the founders of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. 'S. S. D. D.' - the initials of the person who supplied the commentary - stand for 'Sapientia Sapienti Dona Data', the magical motto of Florence Farr. The work itself is a treatise by Eugenius Philalethes (Thomas Vaughan: 1621 - 1666), the renowned Welsh alchemist. A few light discolored spots on front board, browning to endpapers and first and last few leaves, old bookseller's stamp on front free endpaper and owner's name and acquisition year (1915) across blank facing title-page, cigarette-packet sized pale brown shadowing across pages 30-31 (presumably someone left a newspaper clipping or something similar in there which offset, browning the paper). Still a tight, better than VG copy of a scarce work. Item #58896
