Where The Two Came to Their Father. A Navaho War Ceremonial Given by Jeff King; Bollingen Series I.

Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press, 1991. Third Edition Revised. Hardcover, Small quarto, xiv + 96 (+ 18 full page color plates). Original blue cloth with decoration in blind to front board and gilt title and author to spine. Maud Oakes was an artist and self-trained anthropologist, who became the first Bollingen fellow. In 1941 she travelled to the Navaho reservation in New Mexico to witness and record their tribal rituals. She got to know Jeff King, an old "medicine man" who allowed her to record the legend and elaborate sand paintings of a Blessing Ceremony. This ceremony was designed to fortify the spirits and psychologically prepare the young men of the tribe as they transitioned into braves or warriors (in this case they were about to be inducted into the US army). Oakes' work was first published as a portfolio (now very rare) and subsequently went through several editions, of which this is the final, and most complete (adding an explanatory and historical Foreword). Still in the original publisher's shrink wrap - thus as NEW - fine condition (no dust jacket issued). Item #59680
