The Consciousness of the Atom.

New York: Lucifer Publishing, 1922. First Edition. Hardcover. Large octavo. xiv + 104pp. Blue cloth lettered in gilt on spine & front board. Glossary & index. Stated First edition. Alice Bailey (1880-1947) was born in England, but moved to America in the early twentieth century. Although she had a strong Christian upbringing, she was drawn to the Theosophical Society, joining its Esoteric Section - the secretive subgroup formed by Blavatsky for those who wanted to seriously pursue the study of the occult. Bailey eventually left the Theosophical Society, but it remained a strong influence, and she believed that the 'Spirit Guide' who had helped her since her 'teens was the same 'Koot Humi' who had communicated with the leading Theosophists. She also claimed contact with another Theosophical 'Master' 'Djwhal Khul - 'The Tibetan' who she said outlined an advanced system of esoteric teaching, which she described in her many books. This volume comprises a series of lectures delivered by Bailey in New York City during the winter of 1921-1922. Cloth a little rubbed, faded at outer margins, spine ends and boards bruised and cloth chafed at corners, page edges and endpapers browned and foxed, gift inscription on front blank (circa 1925), owner's name in pencil front pastedown and front blank, pages toned, text clean. A tight, unmarked near VG copy of the scarce in First edition. Item #60164
