London: "Modern Astrology" Publishing Office, 1909. First Editions. Hardcover. Large octavo. iv + 582pp. Twelve consecutive issues of this magazine bound in gold cloth with gilt titling to red spine label. With a warm inscription on the front blank: "With the editors compliments to his friend, and faithfull worker, Maggie Holloway, 1910. Alan Leo, "Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God". More recently from the collection of English bibliophile and Aleister Crowley scholar Nicholas Bishop-Culpeper, with his booklabel tipped in at rear and his ownership name pencilled on front blank. As was his custom, Culpepper notes on the front blank a reference to Aleister Crowley on page 426 where we find a lengthy review, presumably by Leo himself - of Crowley's "The Equinox Volume I, No. I", which commences with "many strange books are sent to the office of Modern Astrology for review, but the most extraordinary book which has ever come under our notice is certainly this......" Cloth rubbed, darkened, discoloured and somewhat worn overall, all edges and extremities chafed and bumped, page edges and endpapers darkened, discoloured and foxed, pages toned with some scattered browning and foxing, a bit of separation between signatures but still solidly bound. Book has been damp affected leaving text block a bit stiff and rippled but still clean and unmarked. Overall a solid Good only copy of this scarce magazine - made even more interesting by the provenance and author's inscription. Unique! Item #62463
