Original brown cloth with black titling and wreath to upper board, gilt titling and rules to spine, top edge gilt. A novel written in the form of a series of letters by the French mystic Étienne Pivert de Senancour (1770-1846). Waite was led to the novel through his reading of Matthew Arnold's poems about de Senancour and decided that the "primitive untutored Mysticism" of the author deserved broader recognition, and therefore to translate the work, at the same time adding a "Biographical and Critical Introduction." [Gilbert A38]. A little light bruising to the corners and head and tail of spine ends, hint of shelf-wear to cloth. Large stamp of the High Council Library of the Societas Rosicruciana in Anglia (S.R.I.A.) on front paste-down: no other marks. Light foxing to page edges (only). Overall a tight, clean VG+ copy. No dust jacket (believe none issued). Item #62627
