Le Spiritisme (Fakirisme Occidental) Etude Historique Critique et Experimentale.

Paris: Henri Durville, ND [ circa 1920? ]. Reprint (?). Hardcover. Octavo. 344pp. Attractive contemporary binding, vellum spine and corners over brown patterned cloth boards, gilt lettered leather spine label. 24 black and white line drawings etc. in-text. FRENCH text. A critical and experimental study of Spiritualism by Paul Gibier (1851-1900) a French scientist, Director of the American branch of the Pasteur Institute of New York, who embraced Spiritualism in 1885 and became one of its most admired exponents. His work was highly regarded on account of its apparent scientific rigour. This volume explores the origins of Spiritualism, including the beliefs and practices of Native Americans and Hindu Fakirs, and has a lengthy discussion of well-known mediums, as well as an examination of fakes and frauds. First published in 1887, this undated reprint is probably from the 1920s. Originally a softcover, rebound without wrappers, as was typical (indeed intended) with French books of that period. Boards a little rubbed overall with a bit of light chafing and chips to cloth at edges, parchment a bit darkened and discoloured, pages browned and slightly brittle with some chipping to fore-edge, but clean and unmarked. Overall a VG copy. Item #63034
