The rare first edition of this well researched and illustrated history of alchemy & pharmacology. Its author, C. J. S. Thompson (1862-1943)[ Charles John Samuel Thompson ], was in charge of acquisitions for Henry Wellcome, and thus had access to what would become the library of the Wellcome Institute, one of the great collections medical, alchemical, and related books and manuscripts in the world. Spine darkened and rubbed with some dulling of gilt lettering, corners and spine ends lightly bumped, page edges darkened, pages toned, penned name etc and inkstamped name on front blank, otherwise a tight, clean VG+ copy (no dust jacket).
