The Encyclopedia of Face and Form Reading, A Complete Summary of Character Analysis.

Philadelphia, PA: F. A. Davis Company, 1917. Fourth, Revised edition. Hardcover. Small quarto. xxxiv + 1230pp. Half textured brown leather over marbled papered boards, gilt lettering to spine, 380 b&w steel engravings in text, glossary and index. The Fourth revised edition of this popular encyclopedia of Physiognomy described by the publisher as: "The only modern and comprehensive textbook showing "the logical method" of character analysis, with answers to every question on the subject carefully grouped and arranged for quick reference. Physical and Mental traits revealed". Physiognomy was the once popular "science" of assessing a person's character or personality from their outward appearance — particularly their facial features. Like phrenology it was tied to racial, ethnic, class and gender stereotyping, and fell into disfavour. A bit of chafing and light chipping to all edges, light bruising to corners and spine ends, page edges darkened, pages a bit browned and slightly brittle but still a tight, clean VG copy. Large heavy volume, additional shipping may apply. Item #63081
