Photographing the Invisible: Practical Studies in Spirit Photography, Spirit Portraiture, and other Rare but Allied Phenomena.

London: L. N. Fowler, 1911. First Edition. Hardcover. Octavo. xii + 400pp. + 8pp. Red cloth lettered in black on spine & front board. B/w frontis. & illustrations. The first edition of one of the best known works on Spiritualism, and in particular Spirit photography, of the early twentieth century. James Coates was a committed Spiritualist, a regular contributor to the Spiritualist journals "Light" and "Two Worlds" and wrote and edited various books and pamphlets including "Has W. T. Stead Returned? A Symposium" (1913); Practical Hypnotist (1905), and Seeing the Invisible (1906). A hint of fading to the spine, a few marks to the boards, a few tiny splits in cloth hinges, rear endpaper hinge starting, but holding firm. It would appear that at some stage the book has been pushed heavily into a smaller volume or some other object, causing some creasing to the fore-edges of pages 300 - 350 approx (see photographs). A few other pages dog-eared. A little shaken. Still a solid, G + copy that would rate much better were it not for the creasing (no dust jacket issued). Item #64041
