Kardec outlined his thought in five books which became known as the "Spiritist Codification". "The Spirits' Book" is the first book in that series, and basically comprises an Introduction explaining the meaning of "Spiritism" and a series of 1019 questions on "The Nature of Spirits and Their Relations with Men; The Moral Law; The Present Life, The Future Life, and the Destiny of the Human Race," as explained in the "teachings of Spirits of High Degree" and "transmitted through various mediums."
