FRENCH TEXT Allan Kardec (Hippolyte Léon Denizard Rivail 1804–1869) was the founder of "Spiritism"- "a science that deals with the nature, origin, and destiny of spirits, and their relation with the corporeal world." Kardec outlined his thought in five books which became known as the "Spiritist Codification". "The Spirits' Book" is the first book in that series, and basically comprises an Introduction explaining the meaning of "Spiritism" and a series of 1019 questions on "The Nature of Spirits and Their Relations with Men; The Moral Law; The Present Life, The Future Life, and the Destiny of the Human Race," as explained in the "teachings of Spirits of High Degree" and "transmitted through various mediums." Cloth lightly rubbed with a few marks to boards, corners and spine ends bruised and rubbed. Portrait of Kardec (from another publication) tipped onto front pastedown. Pages toned.
