London: Walter Scott, 1888. First Edition Thus. Hardcover, Small octavo. xxxvi [lacking i-ii] + 274 pp (+ 10 pp of adverts). Original olive cloth boards with gilt titling and decoration to spine. "Elfin Music" is essentially a new issue of Waite's "Songs and Poems of Fairyland" produced in slightly smaller format for the Canterbury Poets series, and omitting 16 poems found in the larger edition, although it retains the same Introduction. The final poem, 'An Invocation', is by Waite himself under the pseudonym of Philip Dayre. Gilbert B2(c) At some stage this copy has been in the hands of Waite's bibliographer and biographer Dr. R. A. Gilbert, and has a few bibliographic notes in his hand lightly pencilled on the front pastedown. Cloth shows a little light wear, and is gently rubbed at corners, the front free endpaper (i.e. the first blank) appears to have been replaced. Lacking half-title page. Hint of darkening to text pages, final advertisment leaves clumsily opened, pencilled poem in un-known hand on rear free endpaper. Overall a solid, VG copy. Item #65195
