Small Octavo. 232pp. Attractive contemporary binding, vellum spine and corners over black patterned cloth boards, gilt lettered leather spine label. FRENCH text. Undated but appears to be a 1920s reprint of these reflections on the possible effects that new developments in human understanding - including of subjects such as hypnotism and psychical phenomena - will have on future arts, sciences etc. The author, Paul Gibier (1851-1900), was a French scientist, Director of the American branch of the Pasteur Institute of New York, who embraced Spiritualism in 1885 and became one of its most admired exponents. His work was generally highly regarded on account of its apparent scientific rigor. Originally a softcover, rebound without wrappers, as was typical (indeed intended) with French books of that period. Boards a little rubbed overall, vellum quite darkened, pages toned, unmarked. Overall a tight & clean VG+ copy. Item #66006
