The Mystery and Lore of Apparitions, with Some Account of Ghosts, Spectres, Phantoms, and Boggarts in Early Times.

London: Harold Shaylor, 1930. First Edition. Hardcover. Large octavo. 332pp. Light grey patterned cloth lettered in black on spine & front board. B/w frontis. & illustrations. One of the better researched and illustrated popular survey of apparitions, with a particular emphasis on ghosts and ghost-lore across history. The author of the book, C. J. S. Thompson (1862-1943), was in charge of acquisitions for Henry Wellcome, and thus had access to what would become the library of the Wellcome Institute, one of the great collections medical, alchemical, anthropological and related books and manuscripts in the world. Spine somewhat darkened, some discoloured marks to edges, light shadowing to end papers, trivial spots to the odd margin. Still a tight, clean VG or better copy in a G+ example of the very scarce dust jacket (spine and rear panel of jacket slightly darkened, half inch chipped from top of spine with loss of the word "The" from spine title, lightly rubbed with some small chips and tears to the edges. Now in protective mylar sleeve). Item #67398
