B/w illustrations and photos. Chronological table of sightings etc., bibliography and index. Stated first American edition. Originally published in French in 1965 as "Le Grand Serpent-de-Mer", the book is an extensive scientific investigation of over 500 reported sightings of animal thought to be "sea serpents" over 350 years in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian oceans. The author, Bernard Heuvelmans (1916 – 2001) was a Belgian-French zoologist, scientist, and explorer, and a founding figure in the study of cryptozoology. Light general shelfwear, a match-head sized chip and some creasing to the cloth at the head of the spine, bottom corners bumped causing a barely visible corresponding ripple in the extreme bottom corner of the text block, top edge a bit darkened, pages lightly toned. Still a tight bright VG+ copy in VG+ dust jacket (jacket has a little light shelf-rubbing at the edges and folds, and a bit of yellowing to the reverse. Now in protective mylar cover). Item #67907
