Die Hirten des Dionysos: Die Dionysos-Mysterien der römischen Kaiserzeit und der bukolische Roman des Longus.

Stuttgart: B. G. Teubner, 1988. First Edition. Hardcover. Quarto. xx + 290pp (+ ivpp adverts). Original pale green cloth with brown titling to spine. 65 pages of black and white photographic plates (included in the pagination). GERMAN LANGUAGE. A very nicely produced volume - the plates are separately printed on coated photographic-type paper for better quality reproduction. A serious study of the Dionysian mysteries by Reinhold Merkelbach (1918-2006), a German classical philologist and epigraphist who specialised in the ancient history of religion and held professorships at the University of Erlangen, and the University of Cologne. A tea or coffee splash has discolored the spine-side corner of the rear board, but has not penetrated the book. Aside from this it is a tight, clean, VG+ copy. Oddly the splash has hardly affected the dust jacket, which is just a little yellowed to the back panel, and which, apart from a few short tears, is likewise in VG+ condition. (dust jacket now protected by removable mylar sleeve). Item #68926
