Aleister Crowley contributes a poem "Chants Before Battle" to The English Review, No. 69, August 1914.

London: The English Review, 1914. First Edition. Softcover. Large Octavo. Approx. 170 pages (paginated i - xvi, 1 - 144 (10 pages adverts) Original blue printed wrappers. Aleister Crowley contributes a seven page piece, "Chants Before Battle," made up of a series of short patriotic poems written around the outbreak of the First World War, each in the style of a well-known poet (Chaucer, Tennyson, Browning, Shelley, Blake, et al) and each with the theme "We don't want to fight, but if we have do ...watch out." This copy from the collection of Clive Harper with his discreet book-label neatly tipped in at the rear. Harper is well- known as the bibliographer of Austin Osman Spare, for updating the Aleister Crowley bibliography in the 2011 Teitan Press collection of Gerald Yorke's writings, and as someone who has lent his expertise to numerous other publications. Covers lightly rubbed and a bit darkened, some light chafing and bumping to edges and points. Top edge darkened and foxed, a bit of spot browning and creasing to pages - else bright and clean internally. Overall a VG+ copy of this fragile 100+ year old periodical. It would be hard to find a better copy. Item #69113
