In this third volume in a projected four book series, the author examines the folk beliefs and magical practices of early modern Scotland, with a special focus on those relating to witchcraft. Treating matters of spirit-conjuring, herb-magic, and the Diabolical pact itself, it includes accounts of such peculiar personages as Isobel Gowdie, the Aberdeen Witches, Dr. John Fian and the North Berwick coven, Sir Robert Gordon of Gourdeston, and the Witches of Auldearn. The author, London-born Michael Howard (1948–2015), was active in British occult circles from his late teens onwards, and was a member of various occult groups including the Cultus Sabbati. He was a prolific author on Witchcraft and other esoteric subjects, and from 1976 until his death was the editor of the well-known British journal of traditional witchcraft, magic and neo-Paganism, "The Cauldron."
