From the publisher: "Tibet in Pictures is the photographic record of the Tsaparang expedition to Central and Western Tibet undertaken by Li Gotami Govinda and Lama Govinda from 1947-1949. Volume 1 records the expedition to Central Tibet, depicting the people, geography, architecture, and most importantly, the statues in many temples along the route. In Volume 2 the journey takes us on a pilgrimage to Tsaparang in Western Tibet. Here is the climax of the expeditions, the photographic masterpiece of the author ...." The photographer and main author, Li Gotami Govinda (b. Ratti Petit, 1906 – 1988) was an Indian painter, photographer, and writer who converted to Mahayana Buddhism and traveled extensivley in Tibet with her husband, Lama Anagarika Govinda (b. Ernst Lothar Hoffman, 1898 – 1985), the German born Buddhist and teacher who founded the order of the Arya Maitreya Mandala and became a leading authority on Tibetan Mahayana Buddhism. Many of the sculptures, paintings, buildings etc. in this book had never before been photographed, and sadly a vast number were destroyed during the Chinese occupation of Tibet which began only a few years after the Govindas' travels. Cloth a little marked, corners lightly bruised. There is a long vertical crease down the paper of the front-pastedown - this is not reflected on the front cover itself, so is obviously a minor binding flaw that has been there since the book was new. A few light marks to endpapers, top edge of text block darkened and flecked. Otherwise both volumes are tight, clean and in VG+ condition, in VG dust jackets (the dust jackets are lightly rubbed, moreso at folds and edges, a few small chips and tears, slightly faded at spines. Price-clipped. Now protected by removable mylar sleeves). A large, moderately heavy set which will require additional shipping to that automatically quoted, cost varying according to destination.
