Zos Speaks! Encounters with Austin Osman Spare.

London: Fulgur, 1998. Deluxe Edition. Hardcover. Quarto. 296pp. Original quarter leather binding: black morocco leather spine over fine black cloth with silver titling. top edge silver. Tipped in colour frontispiece, generously illustrated, mostly in black and white, but some magnificent color plates. It was intended that this especially bound copy would have been one of an edition of only 93 copies, all of which were to have been signed and numbered by Kenneth and Steffi Grant and issued in a slip-case (some copies also included a talisman). PLEASE NOTE CAREFULLY: although bound in quarter-leather this copy is neither signed nor numbered, and does not have the slip-case nor the talisman. This was almost certainly one of a handful of extra copies that the publisher commissioned from the binder when the deluxe edition was being bound, so that there would be replacement copies available should others be found to be faulty when numbering the series. If that had been the case the faulty copy would have been destroyed, and one of the extras given its limitation number and signed, etc. Obviously all the extras were not used, and this is one of a few that survive thus. It is therefore technically an out-of-series copy of the deluxe edition, although given that it is neither signed nor slip-cased it could be argued that it constitutes part of its own, very limited, issue. Whichever way one defines this copy, it is a beautifully-bound example of a magnificent and important book. As is well known "Zos Speaks!" includes Austin Osman Spare's "The Book of Zos vel Thanatos" (comprising "The Logomachy", "The Zoetic Grimoire" etc.), and offers a detailed account of Spare and his relationship with Kenneth & Steffi Grant, told through letter and diary extracts, along with an Introduction by Steffi Grant. Out-of-print in all editions. A Fine copy in near Fine dust jacket, of this handsomely bound and very unusual edition. Item #72128
