The Scented Garden of Abdullah the Satirist of Shiraz.

Chicago / York Beach: The Teitan Press, 1991. Facsimile Edition / Edition Deluxe. Hardcover. Large Octavo. 138 (+ii) pp. Full white limp vellum with gilt titling to spine, and green silk ties. Top edge gilt. One of eleven copies of the first issue of the deluxe facsimile issue, bound in full vellum. The editor's own copy. The specially-bound deluxe issue was limited to twenty-one copies in total: the first eleven copies (of which this is one) were bound by SSZ (Sangorski & Sutcliffe Zaehnsdorf) in the UK and released, un-numbered, shortly after the original publication in 1991. The remaining ten copies, numbered I - X and signed by the editor, were bound in the US and released at the end of 2011 to mark the twentieth anniversary of this edition. Part homo-erotic parody, part mystical text, "The Scented Garden of Abdullah the Satirist of Shiraz" (also known as "The Bagh-i-Muattar"), first published in 1910, is one of Crowley's scarcest works. The vellum binding on this deluxe issue reflects that which Crowley commissioned from master binders Zaehnsdorf in 1910 for his own personal copy of the book. Although not noted in the book as such, this was the personal copy of the editor, Martin Starr. Over the several decades since its completion the vellum binding has developed a pleasant age patina - as typical with this material. Fine condition. Item #72729
