The Turba Philosophorum. Or Assembly Of The Sages. Called Also The Book Of Truth In The Art And The Third Pythagorical Synod.
London: George Redway, 1896. First Edition. Hardcover, Ocatvo, iv + 212 pp. Dark red cloth boards with bevelled edges, gilt title etc to spine. Gilt title and author and blind-stamped device from "The Zodiac of Life" to upper board. Index. Top edge tinted red, fore and bottom edges untrimmed. The first printing of Waite's translation of "The Turba Philosophorum", an early Latin alchemical text of the 12th Century CE (although according to Gilbert, Waite probably used the texts of the work in Manget's 1702 "Bibliotheca Chemica Curiosa") as the basis for his work. Gilbert B17(a). Cloth faded at spine and edges of boards - as is truly quite common with this volume - corners very lightly bruised with a hint of rubbing. Small (about half the size of a postage stamp) contemporary paper bookseller's label over he publisher's imprint and date on the title-page. Endpapers unevenly browned, pages lightly toned. Still a tight, clean VG+ copy (no dust jacket issued). Quite scarce in First Edition. Item #72977
