Charcoal-coloured endpapers. Appendices, index. Described by Waite as a "guide to spiritual alchemy," AZOTH "was to be James Elliott's first publication, distributed by subscription. Lack of funds forced him, reluctantly, to transfer the book to The Theosophical Publishing Society, who had already approached Waite with a view to taking it over when their manager, Countess Wachmeister, received the prospectus. Why they wanted it remains a mystery, for it was unsympathetic to theosophical ideas ..." [R. A. Gilbert A11]. This volume has the secondary binding - with titling etc. in black only (see Gilbert A11 - p. 31). Cloth a little rubbed with some faint marks, corners and spine ends very lightly bruised and chafed, a bump to spine at upper edge where it meets the rear board . First leaf (advertisements) somewhat darkened, other pages more lightly, evenly toned. Rear endpaper hinge cracking, but board still firmly attached, two short tears to margins of rear endpaper. Overall a nice clean VG or better copy in a solid original binding. Item #73001
