The Argonauts.
New York NY: Gordon Press, 1974. Limited Edition Reprint. Hardcover. Octavo. 36pp. Series maroon faux leather / rexine with gilt title, etc. to spine and front cover. Double-column printing. Edition limited to 200 un-numbered copies. A nicely produced reprint edition by the Gordon Press, a mysterious small press, about which there has been much speculation (including the suggestion that the publications were funded by a government agency who were interested in discovering who it was that would purchase books of this type). Whatever the reason, between 1973 and 1975 the Gordon Press produced, obviously at considerable cost, good quality hardcover reprints of about 20 Crowley titles, each with a print run of 200 copies or less. Given small print-runs, and seemingly terrible distribution, the books seldom appeared on the market, and already by the 1980s & 1990s they were generally regarded as scarce by collectors. Then, in the early 2000s, someone discovered a number of boxes containing brand new copies of about a dozen different Gordon Press titles. Not surprisingly, these were mostly poetical works and plays which had not sold as well as his fiction or magickal works. "The Argonauts" is a play in five parts - each act of which is "a separate play on the Greek model, separately paginated" originally published by Crowley in 1904.
As with many of the other Gordon Press editions of Crowley's early works the text of this volume is reproduced directly from his "Collected Works," although with altered pagination This copy is from the collection of Clive Harper who is well-known as the bibliographer of Austin Osman Spare, for updating the Aleister Crowley bibliography in the 2011 Teitan Press collection of Gerald Yorke's writings, and as someone who has lent his expertise to numerous other publications. A few minor binding flaws - very common in this series - otherwise "As New". Thus in near-Fine condition (no dust jacket - as issued). Item #74650
