Evolution Volume Two. A Fearful Asymmetry. The Peculiar Stylistic Innovations of an Edwardian Symbolist.

UK: Mandrake Press, 2012. First Edition. Hardcover. Square octavo. (8 1/2 ins x 8 1/2 ins), 212pp. Original black cloth with blind stamped title & gilt symbol on upper board. Colour frontis. Colour and b&w illustrations throughout. Index. Limited to 300 numbered copies, with the limitation rather ingeniously added to a colour bookplate type after a work by Spare on the verso of the front free endpaper. As this volume is still sealed in the publisher's shrink-wrap we have been unable to determine the specific limitation number as we didn't want to open it. (PLEASE NOTE the two photographs of the bookplate and title-page attached were from a copy that was previously in stock and are only added to give an idea of what the internals look like).
The second volume in this series of monographs which aim to explore the contexts in which Austin Osman Spare’s art (and also his occultism) developed. In this volume Stephen Pochin scrutinises Spare's bookplate designs, their historical and artistic background, and what they tell us of Spare's relationship with his various patrons, and his and their own preoccupations. As new, still sealed in publisher's shrinkwrap, thus in Fine condition (no dust jacket issued). Item #74669
